Defining Determination and perseverance.
Before diving into the actual framework, I think it’ll be useful to just get clear on what determination and perseverance mean in the context of building a business.
What is determination?
Determination refers to the ability to stay focused and committed to your goals, even in the face of obstacles and challenges. It is what helps you push through difficult times and keeps you on track toward your desired outcome – a successful business!
What is perseverance?
Perseverance, on the other hand, is the tenaciousness with which you go after your goal. It is the ability to keep going even when things seem impossible, it is the refusal to give up, and the ability to maintain a positive attitude despite setbacks and failures.
Both determination and perseverance are key components of a strong work ethic, and they are essential for achieving long-term success.
Alright – let’s dive in.

Without further ado – let’s jump straight into the framework.
S – Set your sights high
Setting your sights high as you might have guessed is all about setting ambitious goals. To achieve great things in your business, you need the kind of goals that will challenge you to grow and push beyond your comfort zone. It is what will keep your motivation up through thick and thin.
Don’t limit yourself by settling for mediocre results – aim high, dream big, and believe in your ability to achieve great things.
Here are some tips for setting your sights high:
- Visualize your future: Take time to think about what you want to achieve in your business. Visualize yourself already having achieved these goals. This will help you stay focused and motivated. Grab my 12-month Law of Attraction journal here to help you along the way.
- Break it down: Break down your big goals into smaller, more manageable ones. This will make them less overwhelming and help you see progress along the way.
- Make a plan: Once you’ve identified your goals, create a plan for how you’re going to achieve them. Set deadlines, create action steps, and hold yourself accountable. Always review your progress against the milestones you’ve set yourself.
- Surround yourself with positivity: Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your dreams. This will help keep you motivated and inspired.
Remember, setting your sights high isn’t about being unrealistic. It’s about believing in yourself and your ability to achieve great things.
H – Have a growth mindset
A growth mindset is essential for building perseverance and determination.
It’s what will allow you to embrace challenges rather than feel overwhelmed by them. For example, when you can switch the narrative and start viewing failures as opportunities to learn and grow, there is very little that can stop you.
You’re far more likely to take calculated risks and take the opportunities that seem impossible when you make yourself ok with the possibility of failure. But by taking those opportunities, you’re also putting yourself in a position where the best possible outcome could occur.
A growth mindset is a belief that your abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. Instead of being discouraged by setbacks, see them as opportunities to learn and improve.
Here are some ways to develop a growth mindset:
- Embrace challenges: Don’t be afraid to take on new challenges or pursue opportunities that are outside of your comfort zone.
- Learn from failures: Rather than viewing failures as a setback, see them as an opportunity to learn and grow. Reflect on what went wrong and how you can improve in the future.
- Stay curious: Keep an open mind and always be willing to learn new things. Read books, attend workshops, and seek out mentors to expand your knowledge.
- Focus on progress, not perfection: Don’t get caught up in trying to be perfect. Instead, focus on making progress and celebrating your successes along the way.
By adopting a growth mindset, you can increase your resilience and adaptability, which will help you persevere through the challenges and setbacks of entrepreneurship.
I – Initiate action
Nothing happens without action. As scary as it may seem you have to get comfortable with taking that first step. Every step after that will become easier and in no time, you’ll be on your way toward achieving your goals.
Don’t wait for opportunities to come to you – create them by taking action and putting yourself out there. Remember, progress is made one step at a time, so don’t be afraid to start small – it will help you build momentum over time.
Here are some actionable tips to help you with this part of the SHINE framework.
- Take one small step at a time: Don’t try to do everything at once. Take one small step towards your goal each day. This will help you stay motivated and keep moving forward.
- Hold yourself accountable: Set deadlines for yourself and hold yourself accountable for meeting them. This will help you stay on track and take action consistently.
- Don’t wait for the perfect moment: There is no perfect time to start working towards your goals. Start now, with what you have, and make adjustments along the way.
- Just do it: Sometimes the best way to initiate action is to simply start. Don’t overthink it, just take that first step and keep moving forward.
Remember, taking action is the first step toward achieving your goals. Don’t let fear or uncertainty hold you back. Just take the first step and keep moving forward.
N – Never give up
The next in the framework is “N” which stands for “never give up” in other words “perseverance”.
Perseverance means sticking with your goals even when things get tough. It means believing in yourself and your abilities, even when others doubt you. You have to keep going because ultimately that is the only way to get to the success you have envisioned for yourself.
Don’t let setbacks or failures derail your progress – stay committed to your vision and keep moving forward, even when the going gets tough.
Here are some tips on how to develop perseverance and never give up:
- Focus on your why: When things get tough, remind yourself of why you started in the first place. Reconnect with your passion and purpose and let that fuel your determination.
- Seek support: Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and your vision, and who can offer encouragement and advice when things get tough.
- Embrace failure: Remember that failure is a natural part of the learning process. Instead of letting it discourage you, use it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and improve.
- Stay optimistic: Cultivate a positive attitude and focus on what’s possible, rather than what’s not. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and keep pushing forward, no matter what challenges come your way.
Remember, perseverance is not just about pushing through challenges, but also about learning and growing from them.
E – Embrace challenges
People often dread the challenges along the way, but you can learn to change your mindset around challenges so that you do not get so fazed by them.
Don’t be afraid to take on new challenges or try things that are outside your comfort zone. Every challenge you face gives you a chance to learn new skills, gain valuable experience, and build your resilience. Here are some tips on how to embrace challenges:
- Change your perspective: Instead of seeing challenges as roadblocks, try to view them as opportunities for growth and development.
- Experiment with different approaches: Be open to trying different strategies and approaches until you find what works best for you.
- Learn from setbacks: Use setbacks as opportunities to learn and adjust your approach, rather than getting discouraged.
- Stay resilient: Remember that challenges are a natural part of life, and staying resilient in the face of adversity can help you come out stronger on the other side.
By embracing challenges, you can develop resilience and perseverance, which are essential qualities for success as a female entrepreneur.
Building determination and perseverance – bonus tip
Practice Negative Visualization
Negative visualization is a technique that has been used for centuries to cultivate a sense of gratitude and appreciation for what we have in our lives. It involves intentionally imagining worst-case scenarios and preparing for them mentally. While this might seem counterintuitive, it can actually help you to feel more grounded and centered in the present moment and can even increase your motivation and productivity.
So why does negative visualization work? One reason is that it helps you put your problems and challenges in perspective. When you imagine the worst-case scenario, you often realize that things aren’t as bad as they seem and that you have the resources and resilience to handle whatever comes your way.
Additionally, negative visualization can help you to appreciate what you have in your life. When we imagine losing something or someone, we often realize how much we take them for granted. This can help us to feel more grateful for what we have and to savor the present moment.
- Focus on what you can control: When imagining worst-case scenarios, focus on what you can control rather than what you can’t. This can help you to feel more empowered and less helpless.
- Use it as a tool, not a crutch: Negative visualization can be a powerful tool, but it’s important not to rely on it too heavily. Use it to prepare yourself for challenges, but don’t let it consume your thoughts.
- Balance it with positive visualization: While negative visualization can be helpful, it’s important to balance it with positive visualization. Take time to imagine the best-case scenario as well and focus on the things you’re grateful for in your life.
