How to be a Girl Boss?
#1 Do not rely on a man.
Yes, there is a reason this is NO. 1! It makes me nervous knowing that in the past women were completely dependent on men and that this was so widely accepted. Boy, have we come far since then. Independence is so liberating.
Never allow a man to think that you depend on him and never depend on him. Make sure that you are investing in yourself to be financially independent. You will be able to pick a partner that complements your life, not someone who completes it.
Similarly, don’t lose yourself in the relationship so much that you lose sight of who you are. Remember that you were ok before you met this person and you do not need them, rather you want them! If I was a guy, I’d much be with someone who wants me rather than needs me!
Continue to keep yourself busy with things that you love, keep growing, keep evolving. The right guy will be on this growth journey with you and will never hold you back.
#2 Prioritise your fitness
“Health is Wealth” quite literally. To be a badass Girl Boss who is taking on the world you need to be the best version of yourself. Exercising regularly is vital. Your health needs to be in top shape if you are going to be living your life to the fullest. You want to make sure that in the future you can enjoy your time and enjoy all you have worked for. Regular exercise will also boost your energy levels, your mood, your productivity, and your grit, plus it will reduce your stress levels! << If that does not define Girl Boss I don’t know what does.

#3 Know your worth
This is a top priority because the higher you climb in your Girl Boss journey, the more likely you are to come across people who want to destroy this journey. You need to have your feet firmly grounded to make sure those people cannot sway you off your feet. You need to be clear on who you are, where you are heading, and what it is that you want in life. Be so comfortable with who you are and so clear on your goals that any criticisms or mean comments go in one ear and out the other, without ever making any last impact.
At times we can be our own worst critics. Everyone has insecurities, everyone has something they do not like about themselves. However, you have to have solid systems in place that allow you to stop any negative self-talk the moment it enters your mind. Make it your priority to work on your self-esteem.
Confidence is a skill, and you like any other skill you can master it with some practice.

#4 Take time to rest
You will need it. When you are a woman on a mission you want to achieve as much as possible in the shortest amount of time. It can be difficult to put things to rest, especially when you are excited about your next step.
However, you need to prioritise your mental wellbeing. Know that you can only go on for so long at your absolute max before you burn out. Once you burn out it will be harder for you to regain the energy and motivation to get back on track. Remember that being a Girl Boss is a marathon and not a sprint. Never run yourself too thin.
So how can you ensure you never burn out?
- Get plenty of sleep
- Schedule in breaks, short ones in the day and plan a long holiday too.
- Reflect on how you are feeling to stop burnout in its tracks before it happens.
- Recheck with yourself and your goal. Do you need to take on this extra work? Is this an opportunity you really cannot pass?
- Never feel guilty for saying no. Saying no is difficult because we hate to feel like we disappoint others But sometimes it has to be done and you should never feel about it.
- Have a hobby. Have multiple things in your life that you value and love. Stay well rounded. If one thing is taken away you will never feel like you completely lost the ground under your feet.
#5 Eat healthily
Think of eating healthy as one of your business strategies. Make sure that this is not negotiable. Similarly, to exercise, having a healthy diet will keep your brain and body happy. If you eat a healthy and well-balanced diet you will have more energy, you will feel happier, and this will allow you to put all this positivity into all other aspects of your life. Including your Girl Boss goals. Never compromise your health.
Life will get busy but try to put some systems in place which will make having a healthy diet easy. You could try meal planning and batch cooking. This can save you lots of time and you have the freedom of knowing that there is always something in the fridge or freezer ready for you to prepare.
Joe Wicks Lean in 15
I personally love Joe Wicks Lean in 15 cookbooks. I have a few of them and he makes cooking a delicious and healthy meal so accessible.
The Roasting Tin
Another one of my favorite cooking methods is to do tray bakes. You chop up the ingredients, place them on a tray, and in they go. The Roasting Tin is one of my favorite series of books for one-tray meals.
Meal Delivery
Although they are pricy, you could also consider a meal delivery service. You can cook the meal yourself with Gusto or Hello Fresh. Or something like allplants where the meals are ready and all you need to do is heat them.
#6 Save money and live within your budget
Use your money to make more money.
Have a saving strategy in place. Plan how much you will put away into your personal savings each month. Decide how much you will invest back into your goals.
Be wise with your money and be willing to hold off on short-term gratification for long-term financial freedom. You will never regret this!
It is not easy to do because with social media you are constantly fed photos of people’s expensive lives. But do not make that your goal, because, in reality, many influencers often purchase expensive items, and return them soon after posting a photo on Instagram.
Don’t live above your means and make calculated financial decisions.
#7 Never apologise for who you are
It is inevitable that as you grow and become an ever more successful Girl Boss you will be met with criticism. People who attack you are only doing so because they see your potential and they are too insecure about themselves. They know they do not have the same perseverance that you do. So keep on shining. The people who truly support you will only want to add to your light. Ignore or challenge any criticism!
#8 Work on self-improvement constantly
Don’t get too comfortable, especially as you become more successful. Never lose sight of the end goal.
Make time in your schedule to read, continue your hobbies, and learn new skills. These things will allow you to keep improving and you never know when a particular skill or one particular piece of information you read will be the answer to your success.
Stay aware of who you are. Reflect on yourself. The best way you can do this is through journaling. Every day in the evening write down three things you like about yourself and one thing you could improve on. Write down three things you achieved during the day and one thing you could do better tomorrow.
Split it into smaller chunks
Your time might be limited so you can easily split a particular activity into smaller chunks. Read 5 pages of a book a day. It might seem like there is no point, but it will add up and it is always better than doing nothing. Similarly, you might be overwhelmed and decide not to do that workout. Split your 30 min session into smaller 10 min chunks. This is known as exercise snacking, and it is a better way to exercise. See my previous post.
Multi-task
When possible multi-task. Listen to an audiobook on Audible while you commute. Listen to a Podcast when you are getting ready in the morning. Maximise your time as it will allow you to have more time for people and hobbies.
#9 Learn to be an amazing leader
“Powerful females support powerful females”! Build a team that is so powerful and so strong that you no longer know who the Boss is!
Make sure you inspire others and help to build them up. No one can take your light away, but if you invest your time in others, they will always have your back. Imagine how bright you can shine together.
Take courses on people management and leadership and keep reflecting on how you can improve. Actively listen to everyone and make everyone feel valued.
#10 Be confident but not cocky
No matter how far you go along on your journey there will always be someone who is doing more than you and who is better than you. Stay humble! Humility and vulnerability go a long way. Know what you bring to the table but also see the value in others. See others’ success as an opportunity to learn. Never get to a point where you are so content with yourself that you lose sight of who you are. Never forget where you came from.
This way you will attract more opportunities and more genuine people into your life. You will be able to have some distance and not take yourself too seriously.
#11 Learn to organise your time effectively.
Time is one of the most valuable things you owe but time is also limited. You have to use it effectively.
Make a plan of your short-term and long-term goals. This keeps you accountable and is a great record of your progress to keep your momentum going.
Plan your week effectively. Block out specific chunks of time in your day or week where you will work on achieving your goals. Equally, block out time in your calendar for people you love and for things you enjoy. This includes plenty of time to relax and unwind. Every Girl Boss knows that she can only keep showing up if she has time to rest as well.
If you have a plan, it will be easier for you to maximize your time and ensure that every area of your life is looked after.
#12 Stop comparing yourself
Never compare your journey to somebody else’s. You are exactly where you are supposed to be. Don’t get distracted by other’s progress, keep clear on your goals, and make sure that you are doing everything you can to achieve them. It might take you a year more to reach your goal, but you could end up being even more successful in the end. Enjoy the process and watch how much you grow. Someone out there is looking at your journey and feeling very inspired by it all.
#13 Surround yourself with likeminded people
You are an average of the 5 people you spend the most of your time with so choose wisely. Make sure your tribe supports you, is loyal, and inspires you.
#14 Tidy and de-clutter
A messy environment equals a messy mind. You want to make sure that your environment is clean and decluttered, so you are not getting distracted. Clutter will kill your productivity.
#15 Be wise with free time
To achieve all the amazing things you have planned for yourself you need to dedicate a lot of time to them. It does mean your time is limited so you have to learn to choose to only do things that serve you and will further your journey.
Only spend time with people who truly care about you and support you. There is no time for people who drain your energy.
At the weekends what activities will energise you the most to set you up for an amazing week ahead?
#16 Get comfortable with failure
Do not try to avoid it because if you do, then you are playing it too safe. It does not mean being careless with your decisions but rather taking calculated chances on things that scare you the most. You will not be able to avoid failure always! If you do fail embrace it because you will learn from it and you will grow. This will be such a valuable journey for your future self and might prevent you from making the wrong choice on an even more important matter in the future.
#17 Get a side hustle
In today’s world, the possibilities of having a side hustle are endless and many people still have not caught up with the idea that making money, particularly online, is so accessible. So, this puts you in a perfect place to capitalise on this relatively low competition.
It does not have to be an online hustle, if you are creative, you could make some physical products and sell them on Etsy.
Most people do not entertain the idea of side hustle because it often is not a get rich quick scheme and it takes a long time to set up and start seeing some results. But it is always worth it for your future self.
Having a side hustle in today’s fast-changing world is a new form of self-care!
#18 Work smarter not harder
Be smart about how you do things and always consider if there is a better and more efficient way of doing them. Consider cost-effectiveness. Is this action going to be worth the money and time? Would it be cheaper if you delegate some work to someone else for a small price so that you gain time to work on other things?
#19 Have fun
You will not be able to keep on going with any one of your goals unless you love and enjoy the process. Make it fun and celebrate all your small and big accomplishments.
#20 Listen to your gut
When something does not feel right, it probably isn’t. This goes for every aspect of your life from work, business to all your relationships. We can make 1000 excuses, even blame ourselves for these feelings but you need to trust that inner feeling. It is protecting you from bad decisions and possibly even bad people. It is your subconscious telling you something is not right; it is that part of you that knows you the best.
#21 Check in with yourself
Are you staying on track with what you set out to achieve? It is fine for goals to change along the way but make sure it is for the right reasons and they are the right goals for you. You will also grow as a person without a doubt but never lose your core values.
#22 Be a kind person
Stay humble and be kind. People will never forget someone who has been nice to them or helped them. These qualities are becoming rarer. Just because you are in a good place right now does not mean you will be forever. You never know when cards might turn, and you will need the support of others. Life love to throw us curve balls. Build a strong network around you so you can all be there for one another so you can get through any challenges.
